Cain, who is strongly considering a bid for the Republican presidential nomination, made an appearance today on WRDU’s Morning Rush in Raleigh, North Carolina where he discussed his views on unions. After host Carmen Conners declared that public unions are “being driven by communist groups,” Cain agreed that he was concerned about unions, telling Conners that some labor unions “are trying to bring down the United States of America.” Cain also maintained that some unions “are trying to destroy the state of Wisconsin”:
CONNERS: We have public unions that are being driven by communist groups like the CPUSA and all that. Are you concerned about the disruptions being caused by these public unions?
CAIN: Yes I am concerned about that disruption. What the American people have got to be told, which is the truth, that some of these unions and some of these disruptions that we have seen, they really are trying to bring down the United States of America. They are trying to destroy the state of Wisconsin.

This is not Cain’s first time making generalized statements that demean a broad swath of Americans. Last month, Cain spoke with ThinkProgress and declared that he “will not” appoint a Muslim in his administration. After controversy ensued from Cain’s bigoted comments, his campaign disavowed the candidate’s pledge not to appoint Muslims.
During the first quarter of 2011, attacking labor unions has been the cause du jour for Republicans. From Wisconsin to Ohio to Michigan and elsewhere, Republican governors and state legislators have pushed legislation curbing the collective bargaining rights of public employees unions. In an interview with ThinkProgress last month, conservative kingmaker Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) took the fight a step further, declaring that he wanted to strip all federal employees of collective bargaining rights. Cain’s comments this morning show just how far some are willing to go to appeal to the Tea Party fringe.
