Dear Readers,
The media does a flat-out terrible job of showing how people are struggling in this economy. In the student loan debt fight, you can go days hearing nothing but numbers and statistics. But for me, this fight becomes so much more personal when I read a story like this:
"I'm a single dad and online graduate student, trying to make it with little hope of building a foundation for my son and for my retirement. Student debt cripples families and parents like myself who are trying to regroup, retrain, retool, and rebuild our economy."
-- Jack F. in Montana
That's why we've created a map of 1,100 more stories about student debt submitted by your fellow Rebuild the Dream community members. Check it out and spread the word.
Take a break from reading about numbers.
Over 1,100 of your student loan stories are on this interactive map as a way of showing America that student debt is a problem and we need to solve it. People's lives are on hold and they are really, really worried. Student debt has passed $1 trillion.
And Congress is about to make it worse on July 1st, when the interest rate on government-subsidized Stafford loans will double. In an apparent effort to force students into even more debt, Senate Republicans are making unreasonable demands to pay for the plan. They are making partisan proposals because they don't feel enough heat to get things done. Students' futures are at stake here. This is not the time to mess around. Let's make sure that enough people get fired up now to put the pressure on Washington.
So two things have to happen: You need to look at the map, read some stories, and get frustrated. Then, share it with your feisty friends who you KNOW will make just as big a stink about it as you.
Here's the map. Share it.
We are asking you to share these stories with your networks because you are the catalyst of change: we can collect these stories and put them on a map, but it is entirely up to you to share them and remind our politicians whose needs they serve.
Thanks and be well,
Molly and the rest of the Rebuild the Dream team
P.S. After you share the map, write a letter to the editor to make sure members of Congress realize their community is pushing for this.
