At least one dozen Republicans will be added to the House Ways and Means Committee in the coming Congress and it is possible that final decisions on membership will not be made until January, according to a leadership aide.
First, the leadership-dominated House Republican Steering Committee must make official the selection of Rep. Dave Camp (R-Mich.) to be the new chairman of the tax-writing committee. Camp, who served as the panel's ranking member in the 111th Congress is favored by the leadership and does not have any challengers. An announcement is expected in the lame-duck session.
An aide to presumptive Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said it is possible that the Steering Committee will not formally address committee membership until the 112th Congress convenes, noting that the decision might be postponed depending on how long the lame-duck session lasts.
Also affecting the decision is the handful of House races that are still too close to be called, all of which feature Democratic incumbents seeking to retain their seat for another two years. Once all of the races are called, the bipartisan leadership must get together and decide on the committee ratios based on whatever the overall House ratio is.
Additionally, it is likely that Boehner will seek to shrink the committee down from its current size of 41 members.
