A Bronx teen was charged Thursday with killing a college student who was trying to protect his little brother from a group of goons who were sticking him up over 50 cents.
Dasheem Campbell, 19, was among a group of young men who tried to rob 16-year-old Steven Hernandez outside an Allerton deli on Monday night.
Steven and Willmer Hernandez, 20, were at the Holland Ave. store about 11 p.m. to buy food for a planned trip to Universal Studios in Orlando, Fla. Willmer intervened when the punks demanded 50 cents from Steven.
According to cops, Campbell was with four or five others when they surrounded the Hernandez brothers.
"Yo, you guys got fifty cents?" Campbell asked the men, witnesses told police.
One of the young men then pulled out a gun and said, "Man, I've had enough of this shit!"
Another man then started going through Steven Hernandez's pockets and took his cell phone. Cops believe the gunman then shot Willmer Hernandez in his stomach.
Willmer, who worked at Red Lobster and attended Borough of Manhattan Community College, died at Jacobi Medical Center.
Campbell was charged with murder, robbery, assault, grand larceny, possession of stolen property and harassment. A judge ordered him held without bail.
Prosecutors said Campbell told cops he was in the store with his pit bull, Pepsi, to buy dog food, but realized he didn't have any money on him. As he was leaving, he said he heard a gun shot but kept walking.
Campbell has a sealed juvenile record and more recent arrests for grand larceny and robbery, a police source said.
"I know his family. They all work and go to school. He's got a sister in college," said Mildred Ramos, 60, who lives near Campbell's home in the Pelham Parkway Houses - just six blocks from the shooting scene.
"I've never seen him in trouble. I'm surprised he would do a bad thing."
Members of the victim's family were making funeral arrangements Thursday.
"I just hope he gets what he deserves," Hernandez's friend, Jasmin Garcia, 22, said of the suspect. "But nothing is going to bring Will back."
Cops are still hunting for the other members of the group.
