Leland, Mississippi Alderwoman Mala Brooks was dragged screaming for a Board of Aldermen meeting last week.

Last year, former Leland Mayor Barbara Brooks and her daughter, Mala Brooks, wrote several checks totaling nearly $12,000 without approval from the Board of Aldermen, current Leland Mayor James Lowe said. The two went to the Mississippi Coast and stayed at the Beau Rivage Casino and Resort for a conference, but the Board of Aldermen hadn’t given approval to the trip, Lowe said.

Two weeks ago, the city asked the two to pay the nearly $12,000 back. Mala Brooks said the checks involved payments for legitimate expenses.

On Tuesday, when the issue was brought up at the Board of Aldermen meeting, Mala Brooks spoke out of turn, Lowe said. The mayor asked her to stop talking several times, but When she wouldn't, he told her that she would removed from the meeting. She said, “That’s fine,” according to Lowe.

Three officers tried to remove her. At one point, she climbed under the table, crying and screaming, “Y'all are doing me wrong. I haven't done nothing wrong. I'm not going anywhere.”

The officers had to pull her out from under the table and carried her out of the meeting. The incident was recorded by the city.

Mala Brooks went to City Hall the next day and took the tape and made copies and passed them out, Lowe said. She returned the tape to City Hall two days later, Lowe said.

Lowe said that he has turned the issue of the $12,000 over to the Mississippi Attorney General's Office.

“We did not do the investigation because of conflict of interest,” Lowe said.

“If they make findings and they make a demand and they don't pay the money back, it will be referred to us or the local district attorney for prosecution or a civil action,” Attorney General Jim Hood said. “We expect the people we elect to act calmly and think through situations and that doesn't always occur and that's why we have a ballot box.”

The city of Leland operates on a $6 million annual budget.

  1. Wow ! Was this a board meeting, or Ms. Smith's third grade class. Many times politicians spend monies that were not prior approved. This is a risk they take, they are not necessarily being dis-honest. But they must take responsibility for their actions if the expenses are not approved. I hope Lelanders can resolve this issue without spending their already limited resources on Lawyer fees. I hope the Board will continue to work with Mala and others to resolve this issue. The Leland Board should make every attempt to remove this film from facebook. It makes the town look very STUPID.
    A Breisch High rad.
