Sarah Palin will address the Extraordinary Women conference in October at Liberty University, the bible school founded by televangelist Rev. Jerry Falwell. The conference’s “vision is to draw women closer to the heart of God and His extraordinary plan for their daily lives,” and Palin will address a crowd at Liberty University’s Vines Center as well as churchgoers nationwide:
Liberty University Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. wrote in an e-mail to The News & Advance of Lynchburg that the event will be broadcast live to more than 1,000 churches.
“Governor Palin is greatly admired by our Liberty University faculty, staff and students for her patriotism and her determination to stand up for what is right despite vicious and unrelenting attacks against her and her family,” Falwell wrote.
Fallwell Sr. was famously called an “agent of intolerance” by Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) — though they later made nice. Liberty University has a strict evangelical code of conduct that, for example, bans gay or lesbian students. Liberty also outlawed the College Democrats from campus because the school was “unable to lend support to a club whose parent organization stands against the moral principles held by” the university.
Palin, dubbed by Newsweek last summer as an “earthy Jerry Falwell,” employedLiberty University’s director of debate as a coach during the 2008 presidential campaign. So Palin should be comfortable on campus — she just has to dress carefully. At Liberty University, even extraordinary women aren’t allowed to wear dresses that end above the knee.
