'Droopy Drawers' bill passes, outlawing sagging baggy pants

TAMPA - The so-called ‘droopy drawers’ bill, banning Florida public school students from wearing baggy, sagging pants in which underwear is shown, has been passed by the Senate and House of Representatives.

The bill now goes to Gov. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) for his signature.

In addition to outlawing jeans that reveal underwear, the bill also bans pants that expose “body parts in an indecent or vulgar manner” or “disrupts the orderly learning environment.”

The bill stipulates specific punishment as well.

A first offense will earn a verbal warning and the principal will call the student’s parent.

If a student does it again, they may not participate in extracurricular activities for a period of up to five days. The principal will also meet with the student’s parent.

If it happens a third time, the student will be suspended for up to three days.

According to both the Hillsborough and Pinellas County school districts, policies already exist outlawing wearing jeans that reveal underwear.

This bill, if signed by the governor, would make punishment for violating the policy harsher.
