Queens voodoo mom Marie Lauradin, who set child, 6, on fire in demon-casting ritual, pleads guilty

The Queens voodoo mom who set her 6-year-old daughter on fire in a demon-casting ritual pleaded guilty to an assault charge Wednesday and faces 17 years in prison.

Marie Lauradin pleaded guilty to first-degree assault during an appearance before Queens Supreme Court Justice Richard Buchter.

Lauradin, 30, admitted pouring rum over daugther Frantzcia Santil's head during the June 2009 incident in the basement of her Queens Village home.

She told cops the voodoo ritual was supposed to rid her daughter of the evil spirits that had invaded her body.

By pleading guilty, Lauradin was spared having to listen to her daugther testify against her. Prosecutors were expected to call the girl to the witness stand.

Buchter is likely to sentence Lauradin to 17 years in prison next month as part of a plea deal worked out with Queens prosecutors.

Last month, the child's grandmother, Sylvenie Thessier, was sentenced to three years in prison on a reckless endangerment charge.

Prosecutors say Thessier, 71, failed to come to the screaming youngster's aid as flames leaped up her body. They say she poured cold water over the child's head and put her to bed with burns that blistered her skin.

The girl has been permanently scarred with burns to her face, torso and legs, covering 25% of her body.
