The United States Secret Service has joined the microblogging service, posting its first tweet on May 9.
While this may seem like a surprising move for an organization with "secret" in its name,@SecretService won't be tweeting in violation of national security. Rather, the feed will serve as a recruitment forum and press release tool for the agency.
A Secret Service spokesperson told CBS News the following:
The @secretservice Twitter account will be used to highlight the Secret Service's investigative mission, share press releases from the Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security, distribute information to local communities hosting National Special Security Events, explore Secret Service history and promote upcoming recruitment opportunities. [...] This will also supplement our ongoing efforts to educate the general public on the dual mission of U.S. Secret Service.
As of Monday afternoon, the Secret Service had over 5,000 Twitter followers but wasn't following anyone--yet.
