Jeffrey Warren, White Student, Gives Back Scholarship Intended For African American Students

When a 17-year-old white Californian high school student walked towards the stage to collect a scholarship last month, awkward laughter erupted from the audience.

That's because it turned out the $1000 scholarship was intended for African American students, but the language in the application never specified that detail, according to the Riverside Press Entreprise.

Instead, the scholarship encouraged African American students to apply, according to the paper.

The next day, Jeffrey Warren decided to return the money to the Martin Luther King Senior Citizens Club, CBS Los Angeles reports.

"I knew they were trying to do a good deed for the African-American community,"Warren told KABC-TV. "I had no trouble giving it back to them at all."

The scholarship has been around since 2005 and has never been awarded to a non-black student.

Now, the language for the scholarship application will be updated and two African American students, who will be attending Cornell University and Xavier University in the fall, have been awarded the scholarships, according to ABC News.
