17 year old Kendrick Johnson of Valdosta, GA was found dead inside of a rolled up mat in his high school gym back in January. Authorities have ruled the death an accident by saying Johnson fell into the mat and suffocated. Thanks to the internet and CNN iReport, the story is getting more publicity.
Keisha Moor –Johnson’s aunt– was one of many who brought the story to CNN’s attention. The teen’s family alleges the local sheriff’s department did not follow protocol on the case, according to CNN affiliate WTXL.
The final autopsy report stated that the teen died of accidental ‘positional asphyxia,’ according to a statement from Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine released on Thursday.
“He was determined to do his best and be his best,” she told CNN. We are just hoping that the truth will come out. It’s hard not sleeping at night not knowing.”
The family believes the teen’s death was not an accident and that foul play was involved. They want a proper investigation.
Family and friends have been rallying for months. Rev. Al Sharpton has also gotten involved.
