Google Talk Down: Gchat Affected By Outage On July 26

Google Talk went down on Thursday morning, taking Gchat with it.

The Google Apps Status Dashboardconfirmed a service outage for Google Talk after 8 a.m ET. Diagnostic siteDownRightNow also registered "possible service trouble" around the same time.

Users took to Twitter to report service issues. "This is a nightmare," wrote one. And for businesses that rely on Gchat and Google Talk to communicate, it's definitely got to be the worst way to start the day.

We've reached out to Google for an ETA on a fix, and we'll update when we hear back.

Are you having issues with Gchat, Google Talk or other third-party services that use either Google product? Sound off in the comments.

UPDATE 1:

That was fast. A Google spokesperson has reached out, writing, "We're aware of a problem with Google Talk, and are doing our best to resolve the issue as soon as possible."

According to a Google Talk status report, posted at 6:50 a.m. ET, this problem is "affecting a majority of users."

"The affected users are able to access Google Talk, but are seeing error messages and/or other unexpected behavior," the report continued.

At The Huffington Post, we're also seeing oddities in Gchat. For example, at times we can see that other users are online, but our typed messages aren't being sent or received.

UPDATE 2: Though Google hasn't yet posted a new update on the Status Dashboard, we began to see sporadic Gchat service around 9:30 a.m., which is an improvement. Google's next update is scheduled for 9:50.

UPDATE 3: Looks like we're going to have to grit our teeth and bear with Google on this one, folks. The company has not resolved the Gchat/Talk issues yet but promises a new status update at 10:50 a.m.

UPDATE 4: Google is finally nearing a full fix, and some Google Talk users are already enjoying a return to normal service. A new Google Talk status update, posted at 10:50 a.m. ET, reads, "Google Talk service has already been restored for some users, and we expect a resolution for all users in the near future. Please note this time frame is an estimate and may change."

UPDATE 5: Google's Apps Status Dashboard indicates that the issue "should be resolved." The following update was posted at 11:25 a.m.:
The problem with Google Talk should be resolved. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and continued support. Please rest assured that system reliability is a top priority at Google, and we are making continuous improvements to make our systems better. If you are still experiencing an issue, please contact us via the Google Help Center.

UPDATE 6: Twitter is experiencing service issues as well Thursday as of 11:40 a.m. ET. So apparently the entire Internet is melting today.
