Apparently, presenting facts by way of dissecting conventional wisdom, is the easiest way to put yourself in a negative light, but its also the root cause of our irrational habit of decontextualizing everything. The discussions about the unrealistic aspirations of young black men, only come about because we don't even bother to look at context and understand how and why these unrealistic aspirations came into existence.
Young black men have made up in their minds that aspiring to be a professional athlete or rapper is actually more rational than attempting to become upwardly mobile through educational attainment. They are literally telling us that they would rather not go through intellectual preserverance in order to become successful. Even though only one in a million become uneducated millionaires ( rappers ), this is still viewed as the more viable alternative. I'm in no way implying that all rappers are uneducated, because contrary to popular opinion, some of your favorite gangster rappers actually grew up upper middle class.
The fact that so many rappers must hide their middle class upbringing, shouldn't surprise anyone. The downplaying of educational status or attainment is a constant theme in contemporary rap music. This anti-education stance that sells so many records, creates the illusion for young men to believe that they too, can become uneducated millionaires or at least pretend to be uneducated to become a millionaire.
This anti-intellectual fantasy in rap music, is in stark contrast to the Social Darwinisim ( Meritocracy ) that governs social relations in this country, but this unfortunate reality makes the unrealistic aspirations that much more appealing to young men. The anti-education stance places young men in the position of the quintessential underdog, that came out on top in the end. This is not just the hip hop version of Horatio Algers myth, these unrealistic aspirations are prefered and even encouraged by the very group that constantly moans about the alleged shortage of educated men.
Due to eugenic inspired Social Darwinism, learning and becoming smarter are the only realistic ways to get ahead. In societies that adhere to the tenets of social darwinism, intellectualism serves as cultural capital. This means anti-intellectual sentiments are antithetical to ones advancement in society. Black women verbalize a whole lot to us, but we never scrutinize and analyze what is being said.
The sellout insult is hurled at the black people who supposedly don't identify with black culture or political ideology. Most of the people we call sellouts, are black conservatives, who nine times out of ten are black males. These aren't ordinary black men either, these conservative black men tend to be highly educated, despite the fact that black women have more degrees, there is still a gendered imbalance in regards to black political ideology. This gendered imbalance in black political ideology can only mean that black women are more in touch with the so called real black culture right?
The implications of this assertion are startling, this is so because for political reasons highly educated black men have been the objects of our contempt. This is in no way implying that all educated black men have accepted and now espouse white americans hereditarian conservative rhetoric, but enough of them have embraced conservative ideals for highly educated black men to be the objects of our contempt. Is it mere concidence that a lot of these conservative black men aren't married to or even involved with black women?
These educated black men are also more likely to view the confrontational behavior of some black women as being unladylike, and they are also more likely to view overweight black women as being unattractive. With all that being said, it should be obvious why black americans don't necessarily encourage our young men to pursue higher education, we assume it could only lead to them being ethnically challenged in the political/cultural sense or worse it could lead to them committing racial treason in the sexual sense for their alleged lack of swagger.
The alleged lack of swagger means nothing but this young man has risen above the anti-intellectual macho culture, that so many black women still identify with. For centuries this anti-intellectual redneck culture has been mistaken as authentic black culture, and for black women to admit to identifying with this redneck culture more so than black men, explains their utter disdain for the educated black man. What we hear black women complain about especially educated black women is the shortage of men who are making more money than them, even though there are many black men making more than them without having a white collar job.
You never hear these black women say they want men that are smarter than them, they eagerly admit to prefering material condescension instead of intellectual condescension even though this is precisely the type of hypocritical BS that can lead to a single and lonely existence in a social darwinist's society. The person with more brains or knowledge is the one who is really in control, whoever believed that the person with the financial advantage is in control, could only be the most materialistic and superficial of people. These anti-intellectual preferences are about undermining any and all male authority that isn't financial, dating a man that is smarter than them would be submitting to male authority in the psychological sense.
Women's hatred of intelligent men can be attributed to the myth that men cheat more than women, and the intelligent men would be more likely to be as shrewd and calculating as a female when trying to hide their infidelity. The fear of being used, cheated on and manipulated by an intelligent guy who has chameleon like qualities, is the motivation or justification for women's anti-intellectual preferences. Women would like to believe all smart guys are ugly, skinny, short, and socially awkward, simply because they have to rationalize their chauvinism without a guilty conscience.
Female caution manifests itself as a full blown misandric paranoia, and this causes them to view the handsome smart guy with suspicion. To women no middle ground exist when it comes to masculinity, to them any good looking nerd would be full of themselves. You would think a combination of good looks and intelligence would make these men ideal, but its actually more reason for women to avoid them. These good looking nerds are "so debonair that its irritating being around them", some of these decent looking educated men do have big heads, but at times their arrogance is exaggerated to justify rejecting them. These women want an uneducated millionaire not the prototypical ubernegro man that in their words " thinks he know everything".
In conclusion the anti-intellectual sexual preferences of black women resemble the unrealistic aspirations of young black men so much that its disturbing.
