A CNN camera crew was nearby, and rushed to a rebel-controlled medical facility with the little girl. Although doctors there were able to stabilize her condition, they lacked equipment to give Rena the surgery she needed. Only one option remained: to drive Rena across Aleppo's front lines to a government-controlled hospital, where doctors hopefully would be able to save her life.

Activists say more than 5,000 people were killed in Syria in August, making it the deadliest month since fighting began in March 2011. UNICEF, the U.N. Children's Fund, said more than 1,600 people lost their lives last week alone.
"The reason behind the high death toll is military operations, shelling, clashes and air raids," Rami Abdul-Rahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a London-based activist group, told the Associated Press. "I would say most people are killed in clashes and executions," he added.
