Chad Johnson Gets Released, Than He Gets Released

UPDATE, 11:50 a.m. ET: Dolphins Head Coach Joe Philbin further discussed Johnson's release Monday morning ... but not much.

"It was not reactive, nor was it based on one single incident," said Philbin of the decision, though he was loathe to elaborate on an issue he wants to keep in house while moving on from it.

"It was more a body of evidence from June 11th forward (when Johnson signed with the team). ... It's more about the fit; in my gut I didn't think the fit was going to be beneficial to either party."

Did the Miami Dolphins do the right thing by releasing Chad Johnson after his domestic assault arrest this weekend?

According to one of the team's core players, maybe not.

"I hate that we didn't stand behind him," LB Karlos Dansbysaid on 640 AM in Miami on Monday morning.

"I know the guys in the locker room would. But the organization felt a totally different way about the situation, and they probably had more information than we know. And they had to do what they had to do."

Dolphins Head Coach Joe Philbin clearly set expectations regarding the off-field behavior of his players by cutting his most accomplished (and perhaps best) wideout even though the 34-year-old Johnson may have seen his last Pro Bowl.

But Johnson's on-field role -- whatever it might have been -- aside, what about letting the legal process play out for a player in a he said/she said situation given he's never been in trouble with the law during his NFL career even if he has dropped a few too many F-bombs for Philbin's taste?

It probably would have helped Johnson's case if he was as young as Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant, whose circumstances seem to be evolving after his skirmish with his mother in July. (Bryant, 23, and a first-round pick two years ago, remains on the roster, and his mom doesn't want charges pressed.)

Johnson and his wife, Basketball Wives star Evelyn Johnson(nee Lozada), have conflicting accounts of what happened in their case. Maybe it's no surprise that two such attention-starved people have stayed off Twitter (their thumbs rarely start talking) while this sorts itself out.

But the Dolphins have already determined their course.

"It's going to be an even bigger distraction right now, I think, because of the simple fact we let him go. I think if we were going to be with the guy, if he was going to be our guy, we have to stand behind him -- even though the situation came about," Dansby said of Johnson, whom was "loved" within the locker room according to the veteran linebacker.

"He didn't get that third strike."
